DATE: July 3, 2014

(Jackson, MS) – Richelle Putnam of Meridian has been awarded a $4,500.00 fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This fellowship is a portion of the $1.34 million in grants the commission awarded in 2014-2015 and will be used to support Richelle’s professional development as an artist or the creation of new work. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The arts in Mississippi are now being recognized as a key component to economic development and as a driver for creative strategies for the growth of our communities,” said Dr. Tom Pearson, Executive Director of MAC. “Individual artists play a vital role as really the backbone of this movement, and it is an honor for this agency to be a part of their professional growth.”

A Mississippi Arts Commission Artist/Teaching Artist Roster and Mississippi Humanities Speaker, Richelle is also a staff writer for Town & Gown Magazine and a contributor to other magazines. Her writing awards include Writers Digest, Writers Journal, Song of the Year, Songwars, Billboard Songwriting and American Songwriter Magazine. She has been published in many anthologies, including Pif Magazine, The Copperfield Review, Birmingham Arts Journal, Common Ties and two bestselling series: A Cup of Comfort for Mothers and Daughters and A Cup of Comfort for Christmas Prayer and A Cup of Comfort Twelve Days of Christmas. History Press commissioned her to write Lauderdale County, Mississippi; a Brief History, released in November 2011. She co-authored Legendary Locals of Meridian, Mississippi (Arcadia Publishing) with June Davidson, released October 2013. Her book The Inspiring Life of Eudora Welty was published by History Press April 2014.
