Was It Worth It?
A one-act play
The time: Somewhere in the afterlife

The setting: A card table

The stakes: Everything

The players: William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Richard Wright,
Muna Lee, and Eudora Welty

The story: Famous historical Mississippi writers meet at the card
table to discuss whether or not the controversial issues they wrote
about and the chances they took or didn't take were worth it.

People know them as pioneers of Southern Literature, but  they were
also people like us, living life, striving for their dreams, whose words
for some spoke a bit too loudly for comfort; people who persevered
difficult times, such as Civil Rights, the Great Depression, addictions,
adultery, and loneliness, reaping from good and bad choices.

Most events discussed are historical and actual quotes are intertwined
with dialogue.

Props required:  One table, one small table to hold typewriter, five
chairs

Play time: 40 minutes
Left to right: Daniel Lee (Tennessee Williams), Barry McMullan (William
Faulkner), Robert Ray (Richard Wright), Virginia Dawkins (Muna Lee),
Richelle Putnam (Eudora Welty). Back row: Emcee Ralph Gordon

The crow flew so fast
That he left his lonely caws
Behind in the fields

Richard Wright
A sheltered life can be daring life as well, for
all serious daring starts from within.

Eudora Welty
I believe that man will not merely endure,
he will prevail.

Each year we grow more faded,
More hopeless,
More alike—
The houses, the park, and I.

Muna Lee
I came to be known as
Tennessee Williams and set
about on a life which has been
described by some, as one of an
itinerant genius.
